Native Rhythms - Music from the Andes

The Yatiyaña performance lasts for about 2 hours, with a 15 minute intermission and is composed of 2 parts:

First part

Here we let the indigenous music be heard from the Aymara- an Ouechua- culture, with traditional instruments from the Andes (these are pre-colombian instruments, from before the arrival of the Spanish). These instruments teach us, in their own way, to recognize the rhythms. These rhythms can be divided into several groups which are related among themselves. Below we list a few of them:

  • The family of the Tarkas
  • The family of the Suri Sikuris
  • The family of the Quena Quenas
  • The family of the Huaca Pinkillos, and so there are a few more.

By every family, we wear the typical, traditional, colorful clothes.

Second part

In this part, we let a selection of rhythms be heard from different regions of Bolivia, by which we use the most important instruments from the Bolivian folklore music, for example: charango, ronroco, guitar, quenas, zampoñas, drums, chajchas, etc.

Rhythms from the highlands are for example: huayños, cuecas, yaravis, motivos, cullawadas, llameradas, tobas, morenadas, diabladas, kallawayas, mohoceñadas, sayas or caporales.

Rhythms of the valleys: k'aluyus, cuecas, huayños, bailecitos, sayas, morenadas, trotes, tonadas.

Rhythms from the tropical areas: taquiraris, carnavalitos, chacareras.

A dance group can perform along with some of the rhythms (this is discussible).

We also play modern Latin American music in which we sing in Spanish.

Sound

For our performances we use (we need) among others: sound installation: amplifier, mixer, microphones, speakers, monitors, decoration, etc. (this is discussible).

  • String instruments: guitar, charango, hualaycho, ronroco, bass.

  • Percusion-instruments: drums, conga's, cajas, tamboerijnen, chajchas, etc.
